A toilet is a place where waste products from
the body are excreted. Simple latrines, with
sewers to carry away waste. The valve cistern,
with a base that could be opened or closed,
was invented by John Harington, godson of
Queen Elizabeth I. In 1775 the U-bend was
designed to keep smells away. This design was
then improved in 1778. The present style of
toilet dates from about 1889.
Other names commonly used for toilet are:
Dunny, John, Loo and Bog.
